Swappable Charms: What Are Interchangeable Earrings and How Do They Work?
Interchangeable earrings are a base earring, usually a hoop, made so you can swap charms on and off. One pair can look different every day, and this guide covers how the charms work, how secure they are and how many you need to start.
What are interchangeable earrings?
Interchangeable earrings are a hoops designed to hold swappable charms. You change the charm, not the whole earring, so one pair becomes pearls on Monday, a birthstone on Saturday and plain hoops in between.
The idea is older than you might think. The V&A holds a 19th-century charm bracelet and notes that each charm was individually chosen by the wearer, and many were personalised with photographs, initials or hair. Swappable earrings bring that same personal touch to your ears.
We design ours in Australia around hoops that are made for charms from the start, so the charm is part of the design and not an afterthought. The charm simply loops onto the hoop and can be easily swapped whenever you want. Just open the hoop, slide the charm on or off, and close it again, it only takes a few seconds.
Our own favourites are the hoops with pearls, blue topaz(December birthstone) and heart charms.
How do earring charms work?
Charms attach to a hoop made to receive them, and you can swap them in seconds. Because every system is built differently, charms generally fit the earrings they were designed for, so check compatibility before you mix brands.
SERAPHI charms attach to the hoops with a small loop connection. To put a charm on or take it off, simply open the hoop, slide the charm on or off, and close the hoop securely again. The easiest way is to hold the hoop firmly while gently opening and closing it.
Swapping takes seconds, which is the point. You can change your look for dinner, travel light with a few charms instead of several pairs, or give the same hoops a new feel for each season.
The logic is practical. A US patent on interchangeable jewelry describes wearers investing in a few base pieces and then buying only the swappable charms to build a varied collection, and it observes that many people change their jewellery just to suit an outfit.
Do the charms stay on securely?
Once the hoop is securely fastened on the ear, the charm is secure too. The most important thing is to make sure the hoop is fully closed and locked into place before wearing it.
I’ve personally worn SERAPHI hoops with charms almost every day for the past 2–3 years and have never had a charm come off or lost a pair of earrings. I’ve worn them while working out and even swimming (although we don’t recommend swimming in your jewellery!), and they have stayed securely in place. See one of our customer reviews below!

How many charms do I need to start?
One pair is plenty to start, and a bundle kit makes that easy. A kit is hoops plus a pair of charms, which start from $168 in sterling silver or $198 in gold vermeil (AUD), so you can wear them straight out of the box. Add more charms over time. A pair of charms start from $98 AUD and are available in a range which include Gemstone and birthstone charms and pearl charm designs.
